Sussex-based Gun Brewery has won numerous awards since selling its first artisan pint back in 2015. With success came the need to move to larger premises in 2022, and as a company firmly committed to social and environmental responsibility, Gun Brewery took the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by installing a solar PV system.
Finance can often be a barrier to innovation and Gun Brewery offset some of the capital cost of the project with a crowdfunder campaign which offered funders credit behind the bar in the new taproom. Support from customers was overwhelming and the target was raised in full.
Letting customers know about the solar plans was a challenge, but news spread and ensured the success of the solar project.
Thanks to their customers support, the new 21kW solar system completely powers operations during the day and has slashed electricity costs for the brewery. Looking ahead, the return on investment is estimated to be within 3 years from the solar array going live.
However, it is not just money that Gun Brewery is saving – the solar panels are forecasted to save over 249 tonnes of carbon over the next 20 years. To put this figure into perspective, it takes between 31 to 46 trees to offset 1 tonne of CO2. That means that Gun Brewery’s new solar system is having the same positive environmental effect as 7037 to 10,442 trees.
To celebrate the commissioning of the new solar project, the brewery thought it would be a great idea to team up with OHM Energy for a collaboration beer. A summer hopped lager called Solager was decided upon and we are thrilled with the result.

With current electricity rates usually between 30-50p per kWh, the system will pay for itself within three years.
“We were on a tight deadline and the team at OHM were fantastic at pulling out all the stops to get the project complete on time.”
